In 1839, just two years after Victoria became queen of Great Britain and Ireland, the medium of photography was announced to the world. This exhibition explores the relationship between the new art form and the queen, whose passion for collecting photographs began in the 1840s. On display are rare daguerreotypes, private portraits of the Royal Family, and a selection of prints by early masters of photography. Through June 8.
Connecting Seas draws on the Getty Research Institute's extensive special collections to reveal how adventures on other continents and discoveries of different cultures were perceived, represented, and transmitted in the past, when ocean travel was the primary means by which people and knowledge circulated. Featuring rare books and maps, photographs and panoramic vues d'optique, prints, and even Napoleon's monumental folios on Egypt, the exhibition traces the fascinating course of scholarly investigation and comprehension of cultures in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Through April 13, 2014.
Join the L.A. Philharmonic and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet for an evening of Ramance Period classics from Beethoven and Ravel. Despite his status as a musical superstar at the time, very little is known about the creation of Beethoven’s final concerto, composed in 1809 and the only one of his piano concertos that he did not play himself; his deafness was too limiting by that time for public performance. However, it is hard to miss the noble grandeur of its musical ideas. Ravel’s impassioned and sensual account of the famous pastoral lovers shows his mastery of French orchestral color. March 28-30.
James Turrell: A Retrospective explores nearly fifty years in the career of James Turrell (b. 1943, Los Angeles), a key artist in the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 1960s and 70s. The exhibition includes early geometric light projections, prints and drawings, installations exploring sensory deprivation and seemingly unmodulated fields of colored light, and recent two-dimensional work with holograms.

The efforts of MOCA’s Acquisition & Collection, Photography, and Drawings committees, as well as those of many generous individuals and institutions, have enabled the museum to cultivate one of the premier collections of contemporary art in the United States.
