The Renaissance courts of northern Italy, among the wealthiest and most sophisticated in Europe, attracted innovative artists who created objects of remarkable beauty. Princes and courtiers offered painters and illuminators favorable contracts and social prestige in return for lavishly decorated panels and books. These works prominently displayed their owners' scholarly learning, religious devotion, and elite status. This exhibition celebrates the magnificent illuminations that emerged from this courtly context—an array of visual riches fit for the highest-ranking members of Renaissance society. March 31- June 21, 2015.
Accidentally discovered by a French farmer in 1830, the spectacular hoard of gilt-silver statuettes and vessels known as the Berthouville Treasure was originally dedicated to the Gallo-Roman god Mercury. Following four years of meticulous conservation and research at the Getty Villa, this exhibition allows viewers to appreciate their full splendor and offers new insights about ancient art, technology, religion, and cultural interaction. December 23 – August 17, 2015.
New music is exploding around the country. While no single festival could encompass the vastness of American musical expression today, the LA Phil’s Next on Grand will present a snapshot of contemporary American music, from its most established voices— Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams— to its most remarkable emergent ones— Caroline Shaw, Andrew Norman, and Chris Cerrone among others. Experience six world premieres, two U.S. premieres, dance, and much more, all in celebration of the widely diverse and wildly creative music being made in early 21st-century America. May 19 - June14, 2015.
Drawn entirely from the premier collection of The New-York Historical Society, "Nature and the American Vision: The Hudson River School" features forty-five outstanding American landscape paintings from the nineteenth-century. Among the artists represented in the exhibition are the heroes of the American landscape movement: Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, and Albert Bierstadt, among others. Through June 7, 2015.
The efforts of MOCA’s Acquisition & Collection, Photography, and Drawings committees, as well as those of many generous individuals and institutions, have enabled the museum to cultivate one of the premier collections of contemporary art in the United States.
It began as one man's story… became everyone's music… and is now Broadway's musical. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat. April 28 - June 7, 2015, 2015.
